Care for Your Natural Stone Counter Tops

Granite Care

Your granite will receive one application of sealant prior to installation and a second application during installation, to assure stain resistance. Once installed, to protect the beauty and durability of your granite, please avoid:

  • Abrasive cleaners
  • Prolonged exposure to oils and oil-based products
  • Extreme heat

Though a rare occurrence, it is possible to develop a crack in granite as a result of high heat exposure. Avoid cracking by treating your granite like glass, being careful to use coasters and hot pads under extremely hot containers. Granite floors should be dry dust mopped frequently to protect the sheen and prevent dulling.

Granite Cleaning

Use a damp cloth to wipe the stone or a liquid dish soap to remove oil or grime from the surface. Rinse with clean water to remove residual soap film. A dry cloth can be used to dry and buff the granite and remove any streaking. Oil spills should be wiped up immediately to avoid staining the granite.

Granite Sealant

Stone Center routinely tests new sealers as they come on the market to assure that we are using the best product available. Stone Center utilizes a penetrating silicone sealant to help protect the granite from staining. While the sealant should last for many years of regular use, it will not make the granite impervious to staining. It may be necessary to re-seal the granite at some point in the future. To determine if re-sealing is necessary, we suggest this simple test: Place a wet sponge on the granite surface for 5-10 minutes. If the area under the sponge looks dark, we recommend the stone be resealed.

Marble and Limestone Care

Fine marble will keep its shine for a long time when given the same basic care and attention you would give fine wood. Make it a practice to use coasters under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices. Marble is an alkaline material and acid will eat into or "etch" the stone. To avoid this, be sure to wipe up spills immediately. Use hot plates under heated dishes, and placemats or felt bottoms under china, ceramics, silver and bric-a-brac to prevent scratching of the marble. Floors should be dust mopped frequently to prevent dulling and foot traffic patterns.

Marble and Limestone Cleaning

Wash marble with a clean, soft cloth and warm water. For stubborn dirt and grime a mild, pH neutral, liquid soap may be used. Avoid lemon or citrus based soaps. Marble-specific soaps such as Mira clean are also available. DO NOT use any abrasive cleaners or cleaning pads on marble and limestone. Rinse off soap with clean water to prevent build up. Be sure to read product labels to ensure suitability. For further protection, a clear marble wax (specific for this purpose) may be applied. Follow the instructions carefully.

Marble and Limestone Sealant

Stone Center utilizes a penetrating silicone sealant to help repel liquids and prevent stains. This application will not prevent etching or scratching. The sealant allows the stone to breath and is not impervious to liquids left standing for long periods of time.
